A rattling train becomes a moving patchwork of lives. On board a single mother tries to keep a hyperactive child in check, a young man pushes for control over his girlfriend, a cleaner is begged for help by her former boss, a convenience store worker has returned with a score to settle, three siblings argue over race and politics, and an elderly couple revisit their own small acts of resistance. Busker Charity keeps up a steady refrain of "pay up, pay up", while a simmering tension makes the carriage feel uncomfortably alive.
Andrew Bovell, Patricia Cornelius, Melissa Reeves, Christos Tsiolkas and Irine Vela have come together to probe class and marginalisation. The piece registers the nation's pulse and asks whether Australia really sings with one voice. If the country were a choir, this might be the rehearsal where half the singers have lost the sheet music and the rest are arguing about the tempo.
