Ever wondered what goes bump, chirp, or even ultrasonic screech in the night around Launceston. Turns out, our nocturnal neighbours are quite the chatty bunch, from tiny bats doing their high frequency thing to the occasional boom of a bittern trying to impress someone. Most of us are completely oblivious to this hidden nightlife symphony, but there is a way to tune in. Come along to Launceston Library to find out how.

If you fancy becoming a sort of undercover eavesdropper on the animal kingdom, the CallTrackers project is your ticket. It involves borrowing some rather clever sound recording gear from your local library (yes, Launceston Library is one of the spots) between September and March. You get to point it at the bush, record some mysterious noises, and then upload them to a special website called Acoustic Pipeline. Suddenly, you are not just recording random sounds, you are helping figure out who is who in the animal sound parade and keeping tabs on their movements across Tassie. It is citizen science with a healthy dose of nocturnal detective work. Entry is free, but remember to book your place.
