Birth of Planet Earth tells the messy, slightly violent story of how our planet came to be. Four and a half billion years ago clouds of dust and rock swirled together to form planets, and astronomers now reckon our galaxy is full of planetary systems with worlds roughly our size. Under the planetarium dome the show stages a realistic re?creation of the giant collision many scientists think created the Moon, like a cosmic fender bender on a planetary scale.

The programme then follows the slow recovery from that chaos, tracing how molten rock, impacts and chemistry gradually gave rise to oceans and life, and what that history suggests about finding other worlds truly like Earth. The visuals make the science clear and occasionally wry, because it turns out planetary formation is equal parts brutal and oddly elegant.
