What is a black hole? Imagine a patch of space so greedy that not even light can escape. Scientists such as Einstein speculated about them long before we had proof, and yes, there is a massive one sitting at the centre of our Milky Way. They are wonderfully strange, often misunderstood, and not actually tidy cosmic vacuum cleaners, even if that mental picture is hard to resist.
This relaxed programme from the Melbourne Planetarium explains what black holes really are, how they form, and how astronomers track them down. It also explores the mind bending physics of how black holes warp space and time and, for the curious and cautious alike, describes what would happen if you got too close. Spoiler: the closer you get, the worse your holiday stories become, so enjoying these ideas from a safe distance is recommended.
