The Launceston Planetarium is showing Capturing the Cosmos, a film about astronomers who survey the vastness of space and then try to make sense of what they find. Narrated by Academy Award winning actor Geoffrey Rush, it follows the new kinds of observations being carried out beneath the clear skies of the Australian outback and the slow work of turning data into understanding.

Think of it as a cosmic detective story with nicer visuals and fewer alibis, where the aim is less about spotting what is out there and more about fitting the pieces together. The film asks the question scientists keep coming back to, and lets you watch them go about answering it with patience, ingenuity and a fair bit of curiosity.
