Light pollution — the phrase sounds like something your neighbour grumbles about at a backyard barbie, but it's more than a nuisance bulb. For generations we have been happy to switch on artificial light after sunset and call it normal, even though many plants and animals have been tuned to natural day and night cycles for tens of millions of years. Our own bodies still follow sunrise and sunset, whether we like the glow of a phone screen or not.

When we keep the night unnaturally bright, those rhythms get muddled, with flow-on effects for sleep, ecosystems and even the economy. Dark Side of Light digs into what people mean by light pollution, why it matters, and practical things we can do about it — and yes, that includes more than whispering angrily at a poorly aimed floodlight.
