The Bad Beginning kicks off Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events, now adapted for the stage by Penelope McNamara and Mandy Gibson. It's the story of the Baudelaire siblings, Violet, Klaus, and little Sunny, who are sharp as tacks but hit with the worst luck imaginable after their parents perish in a fire. They have to dodge the scheming Count Olaf, who's basically a walking bad idea bent on swiping their inheritance. This tale has been translated all over the world and spawned movies and a Netflix series, and now it's hitting the boards thanks to the Launceston Youth Theatre Ensemble's Riverside and Queechy Middle Companies, with a bunch of talented kids aged 11 to 15 taking the roles.

Expect some mystery, a touch of heartbreak, and plenty of cheeky antics. Shows are on Thursday 20 November 2025 at 6:30 pm, Friday 21 November at 6:30 pm, Saturday 22 November with matinee at 2:00 pm and evening at 6:30 pm, and Sunday 23 November at 2:00 pm. It's all at the Earl Arts Centre on 10 Earl Street in Launceston, Tasmania. Tickets go for full price at 25 dollars, concession at 20 dollars, and both student and child under 17 at 17 dollars.
