So, there's this film coming out called Save the Skate, which, as you might guess, is all about the Maugean Skate. It's a new flick from Environment Tasmania, made with Land and Sea for All and partnered with Patagonia. Apparently, it dives into what it's like living through big ecological shifts, all set against the rather picturesque backdrop of Macquarie Harbour. At the heart of it all is this Maugean skate, a critter found only in Tasmania, which is reportedly having a bit of a rough time and is apparently on the verge of disappearing for good.

The film chats with various folk, from boffins to artists and just regular community members, to unravel the drama playing out in one of Tassie's more famous waterways. It sounds like it's a bit of a yarn about what's being lost, who's responsible, and how some people are quietly getting on with observing these changes and pondering what sort of future we are setting up for the next generation. If you fancy a look, it's screening on Wednesday 30 July 2025 at 6:00 PM at the Earl Arts Centre, 10 Earl St, Launceston. Tickets will set you back five bucks for general entry or fifteen if you prefer to splash out a bit more.
