Anne's grandfather's World War I diaries do the job service records cannot. Where the official papers give you dates, ranks and neat facts, his notebooks add the mud, the boredom, the small kindnesses and the offhand jokes that paint a much more human picture. Reading them moves you from a checklist of service to the messy, sometimes funny, sometimes grim reality of daily life at the front.

Layering those personal notes over the service file lets us see what Freddie experienced, and by extension what many Australians went through. Along the way you pick up the darker episodes history prefers to gloss over and the surprising lighter moments you rarely hear about. This is a free event. Register via Eventbrite.
