On Sunday the 23rd of August 2026, the Albert Hall in Launceston is hosting a live captured screening of straight from London's West End. This is the one where BAFTA winner Lesley Manville and Aidan Turner from Rivals play two of the nastiest, most delightful schemers in literature. The Marquise de Merteuil and the Vicomte de Valmont treat seduction like a competitive sport, turning desire into a weapon and everyone else into collateral damage. Naturally, when their partnership goes sour, the resulting feud threatens to take down everybody in sight. Christopher Hampton adapted the classic novel, and Marianne Elliott directs this production filmed live at the National Theatre, so expect plenty of glittering salons, sharp dialogue, and people being very cleverly awful to each other.
As for the practical stuff, tickets range from fifteen bucks for full time students up to thirty eight dollars for the premium option which includes a drink on arrival. That is a very reasonable price to watch a bunch of posh French aristocrats ruin each other, all while you sit comfortably in Launceston without having to navigate any actual drawing rooms or duels. The screening starts at 2pm, so you can have a civilised Sunday lunch beforehand and then settle in for some proper theatrical mischief. The Albert Hall is at the corner of Tamar and Cimitiere Streets, which is easy enough to find even if your navigation skills are about as refined as Valmonts moral compass.
