If you have ever found yourself wondering whether your daily walk to the kettle counts as a sport, then Dr Vaughan Cruickshank and Dr Scott Pedersen have exactly the kind of talk you need. On Sunday 28 June 2026 at 1.30pm, they will be hosting the Northern Branch monthly lecture at the QVMAG Inveresk meeting room. The title is "The Importance of Movement: How Are Australians Active and What Else Could We Do?" which is a polite way of asking why so many of us are excellent at sitting. The talk will cover the most popular sports and physical activities across Australia, how they shift depending on whether you are eight or eighty, and what actually gets people off the couch or keeps them firmly stuck to it. They will also rummage through some cunning strategies for sneaking more movement into your day, both at home and while pretending to work.

As for the cost, general admission is a very reasonable seven dollars, students get in for five, and if you are a Royal Society of Tasmania member or a child under twelve, it is completely free. That is a solid deal for an afternoon of guilt free pondering about how many steps you did not take today. The event is in the Meeting Room at the Museum at Inveresk, 2 Invermay Road, Launceston. Come along, learn a thing or two about moving, and maybe even decide to stand up during the talk. Nobody will judge you. Probably.
